Five Simple Yet Effective Scorpion Control Tips For Corpus Christi Properties

November 11, 2021

Scorpions in Texas can be effectively controlled on properties in Corpus Christi; however, to fully eliminate them, speak with a pest control professional. It is estimated that more than 70 different types of scorpions currently exist in North America. Scorpions are arachnids that favor the drier areas of Texas and will potentially sting a human when they feel threatened.

Scorpions have four pairs of legs, two pincers (pedipalps), and a distinctive tail that usually arches over their body and has a stinger. Although scorpions have eyes, they typically have poor vision and rely on other senses to assess surface conditions and stalk prey. Scorpions may range in size from only a ½ inch to more than seven inches long, including their tail.

The most common type that plagues property owners in this region is the striped bark scorpion (Centruroides vittatus). The striped bark scorpion is typically about two inches long with a yellow or tan-colored body, dark striping, and a distinctive mark on the head that resembles a triangle. The males tend to have a longer tail than their female counterparts.

Scorpions are primarily nocturnal and remain hidden during the day, which is critical for survival in hot and dry conditions. These creatures are often found beneath objects such as stones, wood, or other debris as they await signs of prey. The diet of a scorpion might include worms, spiders, and other small insects that they capture with their pincers. The lifespan of scorpions varies among different species, from only three or four years to more than 20 years.

Preventing Different Types Of Scorpions

Scorpions are typically able to climb trees, shrubs, and walls that may allow them access to upper areas of a structure such as an attic. Remove debris such as logs and bricks from the area adjacent to the structure and trim back branches and other vegetation. Inspect all firewood before bringing it indoors for signs of these pests.

How Do Scorpions Get In The House?

Scorpion will use their slender body to navigate through small openings to access the interior of a structure.

Five of the best practices for limiting access include:

  1. Filling weep holes in veneer or stone with screen, wool, or mesh, such as those composed of steel, copper, or nylon.

  2. Fill gaps around windows or doors with a durable weatherstripping product.

  3. Place screens across vents and utility pass-through openings.

  4. Apply sealant or caulk to fill any cracks or crevices that are likely points of entry.

  5. Repair damaged screens on doors or windows.

The Professionals That Know How To Get Rid Of Scorpions

Far too many local property owners that are accustomed to completing do-it-yourself projects apply this strategy when faced with pest-related problems. Unfortunately, despite having the best intentions, most of these efforts generate mediocre results that prolong the frustration. Local retailers sell various aerosol sprays, baiting systems, traps, and other products that are usually insufficient for ousting serious infestations.

The best course of action is to speak with a licensed pest controller that has the experience to get the job done safely and efficiently.
