You Could Be Accidentally Attracting Spiders In Huntsville

December 25, 2022

black widow spider

Seeing a spider crawling through your house can be pretty alarming. While most of the spiders in this area are harmless, having a spider in your home can signify more significant problems. At EnviroGuard, our Huntsville pest control specialists know exactly what to do if you have a spider problem in your home.

Types Of Spiders You May Find In Your Home

There are over 900 different species of spiders in Huntsville. Fortunately, not all of them pose a health risk to humans. Here is a look at some of the most common types of spiders that are found in Huntsville:

  • Long-Bodied Cellar Spider: Sometimes referred to as ¨daddy longlegs,¨ long-bodied-cellar spiders have long, slender bodies and extremely long, thin legs. As their name suggests, they spend most of their time in cellars, basements, or other dark and damp areas. These spiders are utterly harmless to people and cannot bite people or pets.

  • Grey Wall Jumping Spider: Grey wall jumping spiders have short, stout bodies covered in little grey hairs. They can jump from surface to surface quickly. This species is known as one of the friendliest types of spiders. However, they will bite you if they feel their life is in danger. A grey wall jumping spider´s venom is not usually harmful to humans. If this spider bites you, you will usually have slight redness and irritation for a few days.

  • Black Widow Spider: The black widow is one of the most feared spiders in Alabama. It gets its name because the female will kill the male after she mates. The female black widow has a shiny black body and a red or red-orange mark in the shape of an hourglass on her abdomen. The black widow is highly venomous. If one of these spiders bites you, seek medical help as soon as possible. Some symptoms you may feel after getting bit could include nausea, chills, fever, shortness of breath, and high blood pressure.

  • Brown Recluse Spider: The brown recluse is the only other poisonous spider in Huntsville. This spider has a distinctive marking on its dorsum in the shape of a violin. The neck of the violin is pointing towards the embodiment. At the base of the violin-shaped marking are six eyes arranged in a semicircle. The rest of the body is usually a light-brow color. Brown recluse spiders are poisonous and can make you very sick if you are bitten by one. Some symptoms you could have if bitten include fever, joint pain, weakness, and nausea. Also, when they inject venom into you, it will eventually make the tissue around the bite die and shed. If you think a brown recluse bit you, you should seek medical help immediately.

A Lot Of Spiders In Your Home Could Mean A Bigger Problem

Spiders like to eat small insects, like ants. If you see increased spiders in your home, it could mean that another type of pest has also infested your home.

Factors That Attract Spider Into Your House

Because spiders like to feed on small insects, anything that attracts common pests into your home could also attract spiders. Some things that you could do to prevent spiders from coming into your home include:

  1. Keep food in sealed containers

  2. Keep a lid on your indoor and outdoor trash cans

  3. Keep the inside of your home tidy and free of clutter

Spiders also like damp and dark areas. Insulating your water pipes is a good idea to prevent condensation if you have a basement. You could add a box fan or keep the door open to improve ventilation.

The Safest Way To Remove Dangerous Spiders From Your Home

Trying to figure out if a spider in your home is poisonous or not can be dangerous because it requires you to get up close and personal with the potentially harmful creature. You should contact the pest control experts immediately if you see spiders in your Huntsville home. We can eliminate spiders from your home and keep them from returning.
