What To Do About Formosan Termite Infestations In San Antonio

June 02, 2022

termite prevention

Termites are “ant-like” creatures that predominately consume cellulose in materials like wood. Termites are known for causing billions of dollars in property damage each year across the U.S.

Formosan termites (C. formosanus) are a type of subterranean termite, meaning they build their nests below ground. Experts distinguish the Formosan species as being among the most destructive of the thousands of species in existence today.

Are you trying to determine how to get rid of termites in your house? Make sure to contact an established leader in pest control in San Antonio.  Professional pest controllers know how to efficiently exterminate termites from the property and many of the best practices for keeping them from returning.

What Do Formosan Termites Look Like?

Knowing how to identify termites is critical. Some of the primary characteristics of Formosan termites include:

  • They usually measure around ½ of an inch in length, have six legs, and appear either white or brown.

  • Alates or “swarmers” are equipped with shiny wings with very small hairs and are commonly mistaken for flying ants.

  • Unlike ants that have thin waists and bent antennae, termites have thick waists and straight antennae.

Where Do Formosan Termites Live?

Formosan termites construct underground nests. Like other subterranean species, they usually have “mud tubes” or thin, patterned tunnels that connect to their source of wood.

How do you know if you have termites? Look for any irregularities or deformities in wooden structures. Winged “swarms” of termites often congregate in the spring months near an existing colony. Doors or windows also may increasingly become difficult to open or close.

Formosan Termites vs. Subterranean Termites: Key Differences

The Formosan “soldiers” have a rounded head compared to the more rectangular head of a subterranean termite. The subterranean termites also have longer pinchers compared to the Formosan termites.

The Best Way To Get Rid Of Formosan Termites In San Antonio

Some of the tips for preventing termites include keeping firewood, branches, and other organic debris away from the structure. Any water-damaged wood within a structure should be promptly repaired or replaced.
