What You Need To Know About Spider Control In Laredo

February 24, 2023

Spiders, in general, are beneficial for the environment, keeping down the number of insects that spread diseases and ruin our barbecues. However, when they make their way into your home or their numbers grow out of control on your property, they can become a severe problem that needs immediate attention.

While spiders are not likely to contaminate your food or spread infectious diseases, some species carry venom that's dangerous to humans and our four-legged friends.

Let's look at common types of spiders in Texas, how to prevent spiders from getting into your home, and, if that fails, how to find reliable pest control in Laredo.

The Types Of Spiders You May Find In Laredo

Thanks to our warm and dry climate Texas has a sizable population of insects, and where there are insects, there are always spiders preying on them.

In the Laredo area, you're likely to encounter the following spider species:

  • House spiders are 3/16 to 5/16 of an inch in size and yellowish brown with a striped abdomen. These spiders weave intricate webs and are not dangerous.

  •  Wolf spiders are 3/8 to 1 1/2 inches in size and most commonly dark brown. These spiders are widely depicted in horror films because they look so scary. They are nocturnal and aggressive predators that hunt down their prey. Wolf spiders are not aggressive to humans and not dangerous.

  • Jumping spiders are 1/8 to 3/4 of an inch in size and are usually brown or grey. These spiders don't weave webs to catch prey but do so to have a place to hide, an active predator that jumps to catch prey. Non-venomous.

  •  Brown recluse spiders are 1/4 to 1/2 inches in size, light brown, and easily identified by a dark brown violin marking on their backs. Brown recluses are not aggressive by nature as the name suggests but will bite if threatened and carry venom that's more toxic than the venom of a rattlesnake(thankfully in much smaller amounts).

  • Black widow spiders are 1 1/3 to 1 3/8 inches long with a shiny black body and a bright red hourglass marking on the abdomen. Often found hanging upside down in their webs, black widow spiders are the other common venomous spider variety in the United States.

Of all species of spiders in the United States, only brown recluse and black widow spiders are dangerous.

What It Means If You're Seeing Spiders In Your Home

Spiders in Laredo are not interested in the comforts of your house or the crumbs you left on the kitchen counter. They're heading into your home only to follow their insect prey. Seeing spiders in your home is usually a sign of an insect infestation.

Five Helpful Tips To Prevent Spiders In Your Home

The best way to deal with a spider infestation in your Laredo home is to keep them outside the walls in the first place.

These simple tips will help you figure out how:

  • Seal cracks in the walls to keep both spiders and insects out.

  • Make sure window and door screens don't have holes in them.

  • Don't store firewood next to the house.

  • Fix plumbing leaks.

  • Clear away clutter to remove their hiding spots.

The best way to make your home less attractive to spiders is to make sure you take care of any insect prey infesting your home.

The Best Way To Keep Spiders Out Of Your Home

If you see signs of a spider infestation or find a dangerous spider species on your property, the best approach is to call a professional. Handling brown recluse or black widow spiders can result in serious injuries.
